Breakfast at the Papyrus with the White-browed Robin-Chats and the off down to the nearby Entebbe Botanical Gardens. We had the place to ourselves and had a very pleasant few hours wandering the trails. Egyptian Geese and Cattle Egrets fed on the short grass and Scarlet Chested and Olive Bellied Sunbirds were vocal and showing well along with a Collared, Little Green and Blue-throated Brown while Woodland and Pygmy Kingfishers hunted from boughs over the bushes. An African Grey Flycatcher perched up on top and Grey-headed Nigritas were busy feasting on small fruit on one of the palms with Little Greenbuls for company.

One huge fruiting Fig was host to Eastern Plantain
Eaters, Black and White Casqued and Crowned Hornbills, gangs of Great
Blue Turacos and African Grey Parrots but at that stage we could not
find the Ross’s Turacos.

The tree above us was home to a pair of Bat Hawks
that were attempting to build a nest and gave excellent views. They were strange looking birds with bodies
somewhere between a large falcon and a small kite but with huge yellow eyes and
when they flew they resembled very robust heavy falcons. It would have been great to have seen them
actively hunt.

There were many other raptors with Yellow-billed Kites and Fish Eagles perched up, Palm Nut Vultures, African Goshawks and Lizard Buzzards drifting over and a Gabor Goshawk that made a serious attempt to take out a dove.

Down at the edge of Lake Victoria we scanned for
Terns but only found a couple of Grey-headed Gulls and the only birds
diving in were Pied Kingfishers – some of which were a long way out over
the tranquil waters.
Marabous, Open-billed Storks, Egrets and Hadada
Ibis fed unconcerned around us but the colony of Golden Backed Weavers had
deserted their nests in bushes in the shallows which Paul said is not unusual
for this nomadic species. Behind us we
could see flocks of Splendid, Wattled and Ruppell’s Starling moving
determinedly through the tree tops and they seemed to be on a mission.

We continued our loop seeing Grey Capped Warbler and Green
Crombec and finding a pair of Black and White Casqued Hornbills attending
a nest. It was not clear whether they
were feeding young or inspecting a prospective hole.

Just beyond them a fig tree above a café at last gave us our
desired Ross’s Turacos decked out in rich velvety purple, vivid red
wings and red and yellow head gear. The
trees around this area were liberally decked out with the huge webs of giant Orb
Weavers and I would have been very worried if I was a Sunbird or smaller
moving between the trees. Slightly less intimidating were the troops of Black
and White Colobus clambering around the arboretum (don’t get them in Kew
gardens!).

All too soon it was time to head back to the hotel. Paul
stayed with us till lunch time and we then bid him fair well as he took Roman and
Jules to the airport so that he could at last wend his own way home.
This left Angie, Rubina and I to have a relaxed afternoon back at the hotel watching the world go by and being visited by no less than four more Ross’s Turacos. Dusk fell, dinner was taken and then the long journey home began with a midnight flight but this time with only two planes to catch. Thankfully it all went without a hitch and Norwich airport greeted us on a grey but warm morning. Every time I go away on a big trip I think it can’t be equalled and every time I am wrong.
