Costa Rica - Day 17 - 29th March 2022

Where had the time gone? Our final day in Costa Rica. A pre-breakfast stroll around the Robledal gardens gave close views of Spot Breasted Orioles and a pair of Yellow-naped Parrots down by the front gate while Inca and White-winged Doves and Red-billed Pigeons walked around the lawns and Rufous Backed Wrens poked around the bin storage area more like Starlings!  The usual flycatchers watched proceedings from the wires

The Ferruginous Pygmy Owl was staring at me out of the nest box before flying to the adjacent tree to continue the evil eye contest.  A Yellow Warbler was quite aggravated by it but it took no notice.  Lesson’s Motmots scoured the ground for breakfast but I saw nothing bigger than an ant.  The trails of the ants were very impressive with their amazing highways wending their way through the kept lawns.

A Tropical Mockingbird sang on the wasteland behind and Barn Swallows were zipping around and more Rufous Backed Wrens were working their way along the fenceline.  It was with some reluctance that we went for our last breakfast.

We had arranged to be taken out by a local guide Emmanuel Guzman and had a fantastic couple of hours so just email him at info@hotelrobledal.com if you should wish to partake of some quality urban birding. We started in the Copal Free Zone – a huge medical industrial complex where they have been working with the local guides to preserve the remnants of dry zone habitat that still exists between the vast warehouses.  Spot Bellied Bobwhite (it seems to be split from Crested now) was one of the species we were after and a quick whistle from our guide and two appeared from the crispy brown boulder strewn field and ran towards us before stopping at a safe distance just to watch us.  They were entertaining and perky little birds with flaring crests and spotty plumage.

Crossing the road we could hear a Killdeer calling and we soon found a pair in a green flowing stream that ran through the parched grassland.  I saw my first up on Anglesey on the 2nd January 1994 and then in Canada in 2005 from the bus from Toronto airport if memory serves.

This pair were sharing their channel with a Spotted Sandpiper and a very splendid Green Heron while Yellow-Green Vireos chirped from the lone tree and a pair of Southern Lapwings strode through the grass where their long legs came to the fore.

Two young Hoffmann’s Woodpeckers were seen on the way back to the bus before we left site and headed to a piece of dry scrubland that actually backs onto the hotel.

Hoffmann’s Woodpeckers

It was hot and dry but even before we got there we had seen Green-breasted Mango and Cinnamon Hummingbirds along the roadside where they were both holding territories around a belt of Prickly Pear Cactus.

White-tailed Kites quartered the fields and a pair of Eastern Meadowlarks crept along in a more Quail-like manner.  Our walk around the scrub was productive but frustrating.  Lesser Ground Cuckoos were heard at several spots and one came close but I think that a smaller group of people may be required to actually see this elusive species.  There is always next time.

Eastern Meadowlarks

A Mangrove Cuckoo flew across and landed in view – a good bonus given the habitat we were in and another trip addition. It was very much like the Guacimal Road and the species were quite similar too with Stripe-headed Sparrow, Blue Black Grassquits and even a Nutting’s Flycatcher that was quite unusual for here. An Osprey circled overhead and a Grey-naped Yellowthroat appeared at the side of the path, posed and then promptly disappeared and there was still time for one last addition to the trip list with Eastern Wood-Pewee becoming our 45th species of Tyrannidae.

Was trying for the strange plant but the Nutting's Flycatchers snuck in

We circled back for a last lunch at the hotel and some quality moments with the Butterflies, Pygmy Owl,  Motmots, Great Tailed Grackles and Spot Breasted Orioles in the gardens and then it was time to load up for the 20 minute run to the airport.  Somehow on the way back I even got Steve to at last see some House Sparrows

Spot Breasted Oriole - splash of Costa Rican colour as a fine send off

All went smoothly and a White-tailed Kite became our last bird just before boarding and we soon settled in to the long ten hours back to cool England where Spring was struggling to get underway.

New Birds: * = life tick ** = new to Costa Rica but previously seen elsewhere

96: Spot Bellied Bobwhite*

97: Killdeer** (UK & Canada)

Totting up the bird list has been quite tricky and time consuming and ended up slightly higher than I thought with 493 species seen or heard well somewhat surpassing the equally amazing 436 from 2020.

Of these 87 were completely new (the ones in yellow) for me and a further ten were new for Costa Rica (the ones in green) as I had seen them on my travels elsewhere.  The scientific names may be a little off in places as the taxonomy is very fluid in the Americas!

I can't thank Steve, Gina and of course Ramon enough for putting together such a magnificent adventure and my guests for helping to make it such a memorable experience once again.
